Sign spinners, sign flippers, sign twirlers - whatever you choose to call them, I bet you have seen at least one before. They have been wowing people in traffic with tricks and stunts using a huge sign, advertising for businesses all around the globe.
Although these sign spinners have been gaining popularity in the recent years making appearances on social media, movies, TV shows and TV commercials, are they really worth the hype?
I have been a sign spinner for 3 years and a sign spinning instructor for 2 years in the San Antonio, Texas market. Now you might be thinking "You work for them so you must be giving me biased opinions". You aren't entirely wrong. I do think if you are a business owner and would like a cool, flashy way to advertise your business, sign spinners will provide that service.
However...

Here are my unbiased opinions...
Much like any advertising medium, it can be hit or miss. Sign spinners typically rely on their method to attract attention to their sign, but will have no idea who your target client is. Anyone driving by can easily not pay attention to the message they present, despite the cool tricks. Therefore, the best thing to do is give the sign spinners the idea or design for the sign so your message reaches your ideal customer.
The service is cheaper than most popular methods of advertising, but you can still expect to pay a good amount. Aside from the price of the service itself, which can range anywhere from $33-$40 per hour (depending on your area), there is also a hefty fee for the production of the sign. F.Y.I, The sign will start to look bad after a few months of service.
Location, location, location. One of the good things about using sign spinners is you can have the sign spinner posted anywhere in your area. It can be in front of your business or at a busy intersection.
In my experience though, I have had plenty of clients who placed me in spots so far away or spots that require twists and turns to reach their business, which resulted in little to no visitors. On rare occasions, city ordinances may even interfere with a sign spinner's hustle and may slow down productivity from both the sign spinner and sales.
The sign spinners' image. The sign spinners company pride themselves in the professionalism and performance they serve, and they often don't disappoint. Some of the company's most common type of employees are high school students/graduates, military veterans and sometimes former felons looking for a 2nd chance in society. Because this company hires all types of people, don't expect a certain image that will suit your brand, but do expect charisma, athleticism, and plenty of smiles.
So are sign spinners worth the marketing budget?
They can be if the client gives the sign spinner a logical placement in their marketing strategy or if the client has an open ear for a strategy from the sign spinner. The unique type of work that these sign spinners put in can not only give your ads a nice flair, but they will also interact with your customers, inviting them [customers] into your place of business. The work of the sign spinner is underrated, they work all year round, come rain or shine, sleet or snow. All for the sake of building other businesses and brands.
